"We found that patients with severe gum disease were SEVEN TIMES more likely to have
low birth weight babies", says the professor who lead the most detailed study on this
problem. Dr. Steven Offenbacher of the University of North Carolina says that these
findings have serious implications because such babies account for 67% of all infant
mortalities! Of all babies born in the US, 10% are premature AND low in birth weight (less
than 5.3 pounds). They account for 5,000,000 neonatal ICU hospital days annually at a cost
of more than $5,000,000,000.00 ($5 Billion) every year. "They are underdeveloped and
ill-prepared to survive in the outside world."
Dr. Offenbacher adds, "For the 30% that do survive, their low weight is a major cause
of long-term disability and illness later in life. Now it appears that gum disease...
could be a major cause of it."
M.C. McCormick in the New England Journal of Medicine stated in 1985 that a hoped for
decline in this societal problem will be sustained only through the Prevention of
low-weight births through effective services for the mothers during pregnancy.
Even a small amount of gingival bleeding should be cause for alarm. It is not caused by
hard brushing, but by anaerobic sulfur-producing bacteria. The sulfur compounds they
produce allow their own toxins, plus toxins from other bacteria, to enter the blood
stream. Some of these toxins may well cross the placenta to inhibit growth in unborn
children and cause low birth weights.
