Oral Health For Pets

Why Products for Dogs?

Back in 1994, when I started to treat bad breath in humans with our TheraBreath System, we received quite a bit of publicity, because no one else had decided to tackle this misunderstood problem on a full time basis. Within a few weeks, newspapers and magazines contacted us to get more information. One of the first emails we received was the following:

Dear Dr. Katz:

Help! My 2 Pomeranians have terrible breath, but no veterinarian can ever find the cause. Their teeth, gums, digestive systems are perfectly healthy. They eat IAMS Mini Chunks and drink only fresh water. And they do not have problems with gas. They are not caprophagic and they don’t take medications.

I’ve tried all kinds of enzymatic additives (such as the chlorophyll type and others) from pet catalogs and they are supposed to make the odor go away, but it doesn’t work. BreathAsure for Dogs doesn’t work either.

Constantly chewing rawhide doesn’t work. Will your products work? They weigh 4 and 7 pounds.

E.M.

Well, I sent E.M. a bottle of our TheraBreath Oral Rinse and a tube of our TheraBreath toothpaste and sure enough, 2 weeks later I got the following email:

Dear Dr. Katz:

THANK YOU! My 2 Poms Thank you and I thank you! I don’t know how you did it, but my 2 dogs do not have "dog breath" anymore. I am going to start using your products on my Golden Retriever tomorrow, because he’s getting a bit older and his breath is not that great either.

What do you know that veterinarians don’t know? I hope this leads you to produce these products for dogs on a regular basis.

E.M.

The importance of Oral Health for your dogs:

Oral Health in Dogs is more important for dogs than humans.  This is because it is extremely difficult to restore a dog's teeth and mouth, as is usually done when we have decay or lose a tooth.  [I have yet to see Dog Dentures.] Consequently, your dog must hold on to every tooth possible.  On a related basis, their gums must be in excellent shape in order to maintain the bone that surrounds the roots of their teeth, so that they don't lose their teeth to gum disease, which unfortunately happens much too often.

What Causes Dog Breath and Dog Odors?

Bad Breath in humans is just like bad breath in dogs. It is caused by "anaerobic" bacteria that start to break down proteins and release the sulfur compounds in the amino acids that make up these proteins.

More importantly, in dogs (and also in cats), the start of bad breath is a sign that periodontal disease (gum Disease) may be on the way. Gum disease is the most diagnosed problem in dogs and nearly always leads to tooth loss. Once that happens your pet cannot eat properly and their health may start to deteriorate very rapidly.

Before your pet reaches the age of four, 80% of all dogs and 70% of all cats will show signs of dental disease. And, just as in humans, when oral bacteria start to have access to interior organs through weak and bleeding gums, more serious problems, such as heart, lung, and kidney disease may follow.

Quite often these bacteria can start to breed deep into your dog’s coat. This is a perfect anaerobic environment which can produce offensive odors that regular dog shampoos cannot stop or prevent because they provide cover-up fragrances at best. Dr. Katz De-Odorizing and Soothing Shampoo contains natural ingredients to blast away these odors with Oxygen and to soothe your dog with medial-grade aloe vera.

How to Check if your pet has periodontal disease: (without opening their mouth)

1 Make sure you won't be disturbed by noise or distractions, so pick a quiet place

2 Take your time and be very gentle

3 For the left side molars:  Place index finger of left hand on top of muzzle and place left thumb below bottom jaw to prevent your pet from opening their jaw.

4 Lift their lips open with right index finger and thumb

5 Visually examine the gum area around the back molars for plaque & tartar

6 To check for loose teeth, gently press each tooth (if your pet allows it)

7 To check the front teeth, separate upper and lower lips with thumbs & index finger, looking for redness (inflammation or infections) at the gum area at the base of the teeth.

Repeat same steps on the right side

Signs of Gum Disease in your Pet:

Bad, Stale Breath
Missing or Broken  Teeth
Loose Teeth
Bleeding or Swollen Gums
Persistent yellow or brown teeth
Any unusual growths
Avoidance of chew toys, chewing bones,  and drinking cold water
Receding gums
Signs of tartar and plaque buildup
Any signs of pus or drainage

How can this be stopped?

The Oxygenating Compounds in "Dr. Katz for Dogs" have several significant properties:

  1. The Oxygen that is released inside your dog’s mouth changes the environment in which the bacteria live. They cannot live in an environment in which Oxygen is present! Therefore, they are instantly killed off without the use of any antibiotics! (Technically, the oxygenating compounds break down the cell wall of the bacteria, causing them to explode.

  2. The odorous sulfur compounds in "Dog Breath" and "Dog Odors" are the same as in "Human" Halitosis and Human Odors – Hydrogen Sulfide, Methyl Mercaptan and other Volatile Sulfur Compounds. The extra oxygen molecules convert these odorous compounds into simple and safe non-odorous sulfates, which never have an odor!

  3. Also, "Dr. Katz for Dogs" Toothpaste contains a healthy dose of medical-grade aloe vera to soothe damaged gum tissue which allows quicker and better healing to damaged oral tissue. (Some people even put it on their dog's "sore spots" to promote healing.)

Instructions and Ingredients:

Oral Rinse/Spray:

Directions: There are 2 proven ways to use "Dr. Katz for Dogs Oral Solution." You may do either or both:

  1. Add it to your dog’s drinking water: Use 2 Capfuls of "FreshBreath for Dogs Oral Solution" for every 8 ounces (1 cup) of water in your dog’s water bowl. It can be used in this manner 2-3 times per day.

  1. Spray the solution directly into your dog’s mouth: Attach the convenient spray to the bottle and spray "FreshBreath for Dog’s Oral Solution" straight into your dog’s mouth 2-3 times per day.

For Superior Results, make sure to brush your dog’s teeth once daily. Use the enclosed Soft Nylon specially-designed toothbrush and cover the bristles with "Dr. Katz for Dogs Toothpaste". Gently brush the teeth and also make sure to clean the area where the teeth meet the gums to help fight periodontal disease (a major problem for all dogs.)

Ingredients: Purified H2O, Oxyd-VIIIä (Proprietary Stabilized Oxychlor Complexes), Polysorbate 20, Potassium Sorbate Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Benzoate.

Toothpaste:

Directions: Using the specially-designed toothbrush that comes with your kit, cover the bristles with "Dr. Katz for Dogs Toothpaste". (Do not wet the toothbrush first!) Gently brush your dog’s teeth on all surfaces, making sure to brush the area around the gums very well. If possible, spend about 1 minute brushing in this manner because it is very soothing to your dog.

For Best Results Use "Dr. Katz for Dogs" Oral Solution AND "Dr. Katz for Dogs" Toothpaste to improve and maintain your Dog’s Oral Health.

Ingredients: Whole Leaf Aloe Vera Medicum Concentratum, Purified H2O, Calcium Carbonate, Non-Crystalizing Sorbitol – Type Polyol, Glycerin, Sorbitol, Hydrated Silica, Carrageenan (Seaweed), Oxyd-8 (Proprietary Stabilized Oxychlor Complexes), Sodium Benzoate.

Some Tips on Brushing your Pet's Teeth:

If brushing your pet's teeth is new to you, you may want to start gradually.  Here are a couple of hints to help you get started.

For dogs:  Dip your finger into a bit of meat flavored liquid and gently massage your dog's gums for about a minute.  Do this two different times on the first day, and do nothing else.  Give your dog a treat if things go well.  Repeat on the 2nd day, but use a very dilute solution.   On the next day, using the long-handled toothbrush that comes with your kit, dip the bristles into a watered-down version  liquid.  On the 3rd day go ahead and use the product on the toothbrush.
