Christ was said to turn water into wine, and porcelain into dental enamel?

In northeast Mexico, a statue of Jesus Christ is capturing headlines after historians discovered real human teeth within the sculpture. The Lord of Patience statue, housed in a parish of San Bartolo Cuautlalpan, dates back to the 18th century, and specialists at National Institute of Anthropology and History were shocked when they found eight real teeth in the mouth of the statue, which belonged to an adult human.

"It is common that the sculptures have teeth, but they are usually made ??of wood or bone carved individually or as a plate, but this case has eight teeth of an adult, you can even see to the root," researcher Fanny Unikel, the director of Mexico's National School of Restoration, Conservation and Museology, told the International Business Times.

Despite being centuries old, the teeth are in excellent condition. Historians made this discovery after they used an X-ray on the statue, which found deep dental roots almost an inch long.

Among human remains, teeth last longer than any other body part - even bone. Teeth's calcium structure makes them extremely resistant to decomposition. Yet going 300 years without brushing teeth could result in some of the holiest halitosis around.

Researchers said the Lord of Patience statue is a very authentic representation, so it's not a complete surprise that someone would donate their pearly whites to add to its realness. After all, in other parts of Mexico, parishioners have been known to donate money and clothing to saints as well as their hair to make wigs.

"The teeth were probably donated as a token of gratitude," Unikel added. "It's the first time human teeth have been found in a sculpture."
