It is common knowledge that certain savory or pungent foods can cause bad breath. Coffee, onions, garlic, leeks and certain meats can leave an odor in the mouth that rigorous brushing may not remedy. However, even sweet foods can contribute to bad breath, as an episode of the reality television show Flavor of Love demonstrated.
The program itself consisted of a game show in which rapper Flava Flav searched for a relationship. During the final season, in an episode titled "halitosis Ohmyosis," Shy, one of the women competing for Flav's affections, must visit the dentist due to aching teeth.
She discovers that she has multiple cavities, requiring extensive dental repair. The cause is quickly made apparent - Shy eats a diet that consists almost entirely of candy.
Consuming excess sugar can lead to strong bad breath. The bacteria that cause tooth decay feed on sugars that remain in the mouth after a meal. Using these sugars as fuel, they create odor molecules that give breath a bad odor.
The episode illustrates the potential consequences of this process. Shy is ultimately eliminated from the program, in part because she constantly has halitosis.
To cleanse the teeth and eliminate odor-causing bacteria, individuals with bad breath may consider using a specialty breath freshener that neutralizes smells and moistens the mouth.
