How does TheraBreath's odor-eliminating technology work? To answer that question, our very own Dr. Harold Katz appeared on a recent episode of the the History Channel's show "Modern Marvels" to explain where bad breath comes from and what we can do about it.
He should know all about it! Based in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Katz told the news source that his unenviable claim to fame is that, in the fight against halitosis, he's "probably smelled more bad breath than any doctor on the planet."
While that's not a distinction many oral health experts are happy to make, Dr. Katz explained that it was all in the service of helping Americans maintain fresh breath.
So what causes halitosis? "Most bad breath is caused by bacteria that live on the back of the tongue, throat and tonsils," he told Modern Marvels, adding that these microbes pump out volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), which are what give halitosis its, um, piquant odors of rotten eggs, cabbage or spoiled meat.
Dr. Katz used a halimeter to measure VSCs on patients' breath, which proved that people who have eaten foods like onions or garlic may have the worst breath of all.
What can they do about it?
Dr. Katz, who the History Channel described as a "warrior in the battle against stink," points to TheraBreath's oxygenating toothpastes, mouthwashes and other specialty breath fresheners.
These odor-eliminating products are the prime tools in the fight against halitosis. They work by neutralizing VSCs and killing bacteria, which leads to fresher breath both immediately and in the long term.
To boost the power of these tools, people with bad breath can use a specialty nasal spray or oral care probiotics kit to ensure that odor-causing microbes don't come back any time soon.
