Garlic is one of those food items that are a bit misunderstood. While you might eat some garlic and end up with bad breath, you can also receive many benefits from cloves. According to a new study conducted by researchers at the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China, eating a clove of garlic each day can prevent lung cancer and other serious health problems. That's right - you can freely chop up fresh garlic to throw in pastas, salads and to season meat.
Researchers looked at data from 1,424 patients who had lung cancer and 4,500 healthy adults. The data was collected between 2003 and 2010. Smoking played a major role in the development of lung cancer for many patients, which researchers took into consideration. Patients who regularly consumed garlic received benefits that lowered their risk of cancer. Smokers who ate garlic decreased their risk of lung cancer by 30 percent, while those who did not smoke decreased their chances of lung cancer by 44 percent.
Garlic has long been noted for its benefits, and researchers now believe that they are connected to the chemical that is released when you smash a clove of garlic. The chemical, called allicin, can reduce inflammation and reduce the amount of damage that free radicals cause in the body.
Study researchers wrote, "the protective effect of garlic on the development of cancer has been reported in the in vitro and in vivo experimental studies; however, few human epidemiologic studies have evaluated the relationship."
Unfortunately, garlic is a main cause of bad breath, so you may need to take extra precautions to ensure that you aren't stinking up the room. TheraBreath Chewing Gum is a great option for those who are on the go and need to kick bad breath to the curb in an instant. Unlike other gum you find on the shelves at your local grocery store, TheraBreath contains a natural substance called xylitol, which is proven to kill bad breath bacteria and improve the health of your mouth. Plus, xylitol is a natural sweetener, so the gum tastes delicious. Simply pop a piece of gum in your mouth when it's necessary and it will increase saliva flow and freshen the breath. Take that, garlic breath!
