Institute says managers should manage their bad breath

Supervising a team of employees can be a challenging endeavor, and having halitosis can make such a position twice as tough. When it comes to striking a balance between being friendly and firm, responsible and respected, bad breath can have one's workers avoiding all attempts at interpersonal communication.

An article recently published by the Poynter Institute noted that poor emailing skills at work can have an effect similar to that of bad breath. It stated that being unclear, disengaged or unnecessarily verbose in emailed messages to one's employees can push them away and foster a lack of respect.

In a similar way, halitosis can hamstring the relationship between administrator and worker. Many people have worked for a boss who suffered from some form of bad breath - coffee breath is fairly common, though by no means the only one.

Oral odor disinclines employees to listen, to actively engage with a manager, to pay unbroken attention or to look one directly in the eye. It doesn't take a business major to see that this situation is bad for everyone.
