smoking causes dry mouth and bad breath

While studies conflict as to whether marijuana smoke is any more or less harmful than that of cigarettes, one thing is for sure: cannabis use causes bad breath. Individuals who think otherwise may consider using a specialty breath freshening rinse, not to mention avoiding all illegal drugs.

A meta-study published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene found that out of nearly 1,000 previously published reports, seven of them addressed the effect that marijuana use has on halitosis, dental health and the oral environment.

These papers noted that marijuana use tends to cause xerostomia, also known as dry mouth. By parching the palate, this mind-altering drug can allow anaerobic bacteria to run wild in the mouth, where they give off aromatic molecules that lend halitosis its nasty edge.

One way to mitigate the effects of xerostomia is to use a specialty breath freshening product that moistens the mouth as it neutralizes odor.

Researchers also found that compared to people who had never used the drug, cannabis users were more likely to have thick mucus on their tongues, tooth decay, oral cancer and thrush, all of which can give off powerful odors.
