We all know that water is good for us: It helps suppress food cravings, hydrates us and makes individuals all-around healthier. Water is also very good for our mouths. Sipping a sufficient amount of water each day will help maintain a fresh mouth, strong teeth and healthy gums. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day will help flush out bacteria, and it can also stabilize a healthy pH level in the saliva.
Keeping it fresh
No one wants bad breath, and water can help rinse away any nasty food smells. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help you battle bad breath and dry mouth. When it comes to staying healthy, drinking water is quite possibly the easiest thing to incorporate into your daily routine. It's a good idea to try to keep a water bottle with you at all times, so if you are out and feeling your mouth getting dry, you can simply take a few sips and feel better. However, it is important to be drinking water with fluoride in it, which is why bottled water isn’t as helpful. If you live in an area with good tap water, take advantage of it! Since gulping down H2O helps moisten the mouth, it also helps rid your mouth of bacteria and toxins that can cause bad breath.
Flush everything away
After you eat, food particles can lodge in your teeth and the back of the throat. To keep your mouth feeling clean, try to drink a glass of water after every meal. It will wash down everything, and your mouth will essentially be a cleansed palette. After drinking a can of soda or a cup of coffee, drinking water becomes especially important, as it helps to rid your mouth of the acid that these drinks leave on your teeth. If you go straight to your toothbrush after indulging, you may actually be causing more harm than good because your teeth are sensitive from the acid. If you are prone to dry mouth, rinsing everything down with a glass of water is even more important.
Kill bacteria with a little salt
Mixing warm water and salt is one of the best ways to kill bacteria in your mouth. Gargling with this natural mixture can help avoid bad breath, tonsil stones and other throat and mouth illnesses. It may not taste the best, but when you realize the potential of this saltwater mixture, it will be worthwhile. When making this mixture, don’t be skimpy with the salt. The saltier, the better, so add as much as you can handle. Try doing this rinse a couple times a week to prevent any mouth issues.
