How to: Keep fresh breath at a concert

You've got your tickets and ear plugs ready, but what happens when bad breath takes the stage unannounced? Smelly breath can embarrass anyone, especially when you're shoulder to shoulder at a music concert. Shows are supposed to be a thrilling time to see favorite artists and jam out with friends, so halitosis shouldn't stand in the way. 

Take a look at these simple ways to avoid baneful bad breath at a concert:

Stay hydrated: Anyone who has been to a show knows one of the most important things for both body and mouth is to drink plenty of water - especially when it's outside. Long hours sweating, dancing and screaming along with choruses may drain your body of a sizeable amount of water. So, offset the losses with a few bottles of water - camel packs are a smart choice for blazing hot days during music festivals. This will not only nourish your muscles, but also stimulate salivary glands to ward off smelly anaerobic bacteria.

Note: Hydrating is especially crucial when drinking alcohol, which dehydrates the body. Keep up the groove with H2O.  

Keep gum handy: A pack of sugar-free gum can feel like a lifesaver after that three-hour-long set. Just like a workout at the gym, physical activity on the dance floor or in stadium seating can sap water from your cells and cause dry mouth, which turns your mouth into a breeding ground for sulfur-smelling bacteria. Your best choice: Bring along gum that contains xylitol, which is known to clean teeth. 

Use sugarless breath mints: Similar to gum, breath mints temporarily mask halitosis - but they might be just what you need to make it through the encore. The most effective mints stop production of volatile sulfur compounds and stimulate oxygen-rich saliva flow. Look for mints that have zinc gluconate, which block receptors on bad breath bacteria so they don't blind with amino acids, thereby preventing them from producing sulfur compounds. Also, opt for sugarless varieties (or brands with artificial sugars like aspartame or saccharin).

Wash down food with water: If you grab a hot dog, cheesy pretzel or other concert food, it's a good idea to rinse it down with water. The H2O will flush away stray food particles that would otherwise lead to raunchy exhalations. 

Bring a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste (if staying overnight): For those camping out at music festivals like Bonnaroo, TomorrowWorld or others, coming equipped with oral hygiene materials is crucial. Throw in mini toothpaste and a toothbrush to make sure your breath doesn't turn into a (teenage) wasteland.
