Different toothpaste brands have different effects on bad breath

When buying oral care products, how are you supposed to pick between all the different toothpaste brands available online and at the grocery store? The packages make them all seem virtually identical, even though this couldn't be further from the truth.

As a matter of fact, some toothpaste brands are far superior to others, in terms of both their effect on dental health and their ability to eliminate halitosis. All it takes is a discerning eye to be able to separate the good from the bad (or the ugly).

Here are a few points to keep in mind when shopping around for the best toothpaste brands:

- First, don't be lured in by fancy packaging. Some toothpaste manufacturers spend untold millions to design and print boxes and labels that are splashy or eye-catching. Often, these brands are then displayed at eye-level in the store, meaning you are very likely to glance at them first. But don't be fooled! Just like you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, you also need to weigh your toothpaste options based on what's inside of the package.

- Stick to all-natural toothpaste brands. Some pastes contain harsh chemicals like benzalkonium chloride (an allergen) or sodium lauryl sulfate (a detergent). These substances can irritate your cheeks and gums, making you more likely to get canker sores. Consider hewing to the specialty brands that contain organic, oxygenating ingredients. Consumer Reports recommends toothpastes that are gentle and do not have a strong flavor.

- Does it contain fluoride? Most quality toothpaste brands do. If it also contains natural antimicrobials, this is a big plus, according to the American Dental Association.
