There are many factors that may cause you to suffer from post nasal drip, including allergies, air pollution, cold and dry air, deviated septum, dusty and smoky conditions, age, pregnancy, nasal or sinus polyps, a cold or flu and sinus infections. Certain medications may also be the culprits, as some can cause your mucus to dry out and get thick, which makes it get caught in your throat more easily. When the mucus thickens, this may prevent you from breathing through your nose. If your nose is stuffed up, you might have to breathe through your mouth, which can then lead to dry mouth.

Post nasal drip begins when the production of mucus is off. There are two typical ways that this can affect your daily life. The first is the overproduction of mucus, which leads to a constantly runny nose. The other occurs when mucus produced is thick and sticky, turning a yellow or green color. This is when the mucus gets stuck in the back of your throat. Not only is this uncomfortable, but it may also prevent you from breathing correctly or tasting your food. Treatment of post nasal drip can begin at home with several natural remedies.
One of the easiest remedies is to gargle with salt water regularly. This quick and easy solution kills the bacteria in the mouth, soothes the throat and breaks up the mucus that gets caught in the throat. If you want to go the extra mile to get rid of your post nasal drip, you’ll need some baking soda. Mix together one cup of warm water with one teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda. You’ll use this mixture as a nasal rinse to clear out the sinus cavities by trying to swish it around the nose. Afterwards, blow your nose and you can repeat this method up to six times a day. To prevent any future issues, you can use this solution twice a week.
You may not have complete control over the environment you live in, but there are a few things you can do to fight against post nasal drip and other oral issues. If you are a smoker, this may be one of the leading irritants that is causing post nasal drip. Even if you are around smokers, this may cause issues. One of the easiest things to maintain is the humidity in your home by purchasing a humidifier. This will also help prevent dry mouth.
You need to make sure that you are maintaining good oral hygiene, using alcohol free mouthwash and drinking plenty of water. Staying hydrated is a sure-fire way to try to keep your defenses up against illnesses. You can make sure that you gulp down eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and free of illnesses.
