A review of scientific articles on probiotics has established that modification of the bacterial colonies in the mouth can reduce bad breath and improve dental health.
The report, created by oral surgeons at the Valencia University Medical and Dental School in Spain, begins by summarizing nearly 30 years of research into the effects of oral care probiotics on the mouth and gut.
The researchers included a long list of gastrointestinal maladies that may be treated through the supplemental use of probiotics. These include irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, Crohn's disease, inadequate lactose digestion and several dozen others.
After this introduction, the team notes that repeated investigation has revealed that the application of "good" microbes to the oral cavity can result in the crowding out of those that cause halitosis.
Furthermore, oral probiotics can reduce the spread of tooth decay and periodontal disease, the researchers added. Two strains in particular, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactococcus lactis, have been shown to slow the rate of growth of dental caries.
Depending on the treatment, good bacteria last on the tongue for between a week and a month. because of the gradual disappearance of healthy microbes, experts recommend that individuals with halitosis regularly use probiotic kits, like Aktiv K 12 probiotics.
