The National Institutes of Health estimates that nearly 80 percent of Americans have some level of gum disease. This may range from simple gum disease, which may cause light bleeding after brushing, to periodontitis, which results in significant damage to teeth and jawbones.

While the problem may simply be annoying in its early stages, it can transform into a serious and dangerous condition if left untreated. Bleeding gums may quickly begin to recede, pulling back from the teeth to expose the root. The gums may become infected, which can spread to the jawbone and connective tissue. Surgical intervention may be required to repair the damage.

Gingivitis is initially caused by an accumulation of plaque around the gum line. This plaque can be cleared up through regular dental hygiene. However, it can lead to bacterial infections in individuals who fail to take proper care of their teeth. Plaque is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria, and may increase the chances of infection.

bad breath is one of the first warning signs of serious problems. Individuals who notice that they regularly have halitosis may want to visit a dentist to get their condition inspected by a professional. Ronald Frost, a Washington-based dentist, said in a press release that a dental professional is the only person who can diagnose and provide proper treatment for individuals with the worst gum disease.

"Once the plaque and buildup are removed, you will have to go on a regiment of antibacterial mouth rinsing," he said. "The problem usually clears up within a few days. Then it's up to you to maintain healthy oral habits."

Improving oral habits may be one of the surest ways to avoid the problem in the first place. Brushing at least twice each day, flossing and using an antibacterial mouthwash are all important parts of reducing plaque buildups that may cause gingivitis.

Due to the prevalence of gingivitis, many people may not view it as the serious health problem that it is. It is not normal to have bleeding gums or experience to experience bad breath on a daily basis. These are all signs that there may be a more significant issue. Given its connection to over health, taking steps to improve oral health may be vital.
