Most people think that brushing their teeth, flossing and using mouthwash will promote a healthy mouth free of bad breath and other dental problems, but sometimes it depends on the products you are using. Some products on the market today contain alcohol or sodium lauryl sulfate, which are harmful to the mouth.
One particularly harmful product on the market is whitening toothpaste. Today, it is sometimes hard to go to the store without seeing whitening on the label of any traditional toothpaste brand. However, many of these products contain harsh chemicals like aluminum oxide or silica, which does its job of chipping away at the yellow stains on your teeth but it also wears away at the enamel on our teeth. Enamel doesn’t grow back, and this leaves your teeth feeling weak, sensitive and easy to chip.
There are also a lot of products on the market that contain sodium lauryl sulfate, the ingredient that makes your toothpaste foam up. Many people feel that these types of products do the best job of cleaning their mouth because it appears that way, but it is a very harsh detergent that can aggravate any existing oral issues, or create new ones. This chemical can lead to canker sores and dry mouth.
Here’s some food for thought: The same ingredients used in many common toothpastes are also used in everyday toiletries like soap and shampoo to remove grease and oil. The chemical allows oil based ingredients to blend well with water-based ingredients, thus creating a foam.
You know when you rinse your mouth with mouthwash and it burns? You can’t wait until the time is up and you can spit out the dreadful liquid burning away all the bacteria in your mouth. Although it is cutting down on bacterial growth in the mouth, it is also dissolving plaque and breaking down the mucus-like coating that helps keep the mouth from drying out. Having a dry mouth leads to bad breath, which is one of the reasons for using these types of products. Using an oxygenating, alcohol-free mouthwash will get rid of all the harmful bacteria that causes bad breath without leaving it high and dry.
Choosing natural mouthwashes and toothpastes will alleviate odors produced by bacteria in the mouth that causes bad breath and other mouth issues, without creating new ones.
