Toothpaste

Oral health is an important part of one's overall health and so taking care of this aspect of one's health is critical. The results of poor dental habits (among other contributory factors like drinking alcohol, coffee and red wine) are not brushing enough and not using the best product available to get the job done. Toothpaste, mouthwash and dental floss, for example, should be a key part of any dental care regime. This regime should be engaged for a minimum of two times a day for effectiveness; morning and evening.

What is Toothpaste?

Toothpaste is a dentifrice gel or paste which is applied to the teeth, tongue and all areas of the mouth using the aid of a toothbrush. Toothpaste works as a cleaning agent in this regard and should be used daily along with the toothbrush.

How Does Toothpaste Work?

Toothpaste works abrasively to remove the plaque and stuck on food that may be on the teeth, tongue and other areas of the oral cavity. It acts as a general cleanser and fights germs within the mouth.

The best toothpaste to use is one that contains the active ingredient Fluoride. Fluoride is generally a compound of fluorine that is used along with other elements such as calcium fluoride or sodium fluoride in toothpastes.

Fluoride, although used in many kinds of products with varying functions, is used in toothpaste along with other agents like baking soda and salt as a cleanser and enamel strengthener. Fluoride also helps to prevent tooth decay when used regularly and helps fight dental diseases such as gingivitis.

In most cases, the cleansing properties become activated and applied to the oral cavity using the systematic action of a toothbrush. In using the brush, toothpaste should be applied to teeth, gums, the roof of the mouth and the back of the tongue for a thorough clean. One should be careful to not swallow the paste during the cleansing process as it was not intended for the stomach.

Swallowing can cause mild harm to the stomach in the form of discomfort and upset stomach. Swallowing occurs most commonly in children. As such, parents should take on the task of brushing the teeth and mouth of younger children to prevent or limit swallowing the toothpaste. Parents should continue to do so until the child is able to do so on his or her own. Toothpaste also works well when it is used alongside an effective mouthwash.

Different Kinds of Toothpastes

There are different kinds of toothpaste marketed for commercially different ends. In these instances, the toothpastes are altered with different ingredients at different potencies to achieve different or specialized results. As such, toothpaste can be used to treat a myriad of dental hygiene related conditions. For example, there are antibacterial tooth pastes which are useful for general cleaning and germ fighting action in the oral cavity. There is also toothpaste designed for special conditions such as sensitive teeth, fighting gum diseases and teeth whitening. Consider the following:

Halitosis

Outside of Gingivitis and tooth decay, using toothpaste as a regular part of one's dental hygiene regimen can help in the fight against this condition. Halitosis or bad breath as it is most commonly referred to, occurs when there is an unpleasant odor expelled from the mouth when exhaling. Although this is undoubtedly an undesirable condition to have, halitosis is more common than we often think, and it makes social situations particularly unbearable. There are many causes for the condition however and therefore several ways to treat it. One way to treat halitosis is through specially formulated toothpaste that is used regularly to combat the germs that cause bad breath.

Sensitive Teeth

There are some consumers who have sensitive teeth. This condition is aggravated in some situations such as consuming and beverages and other kinds of foods such as hot, sweet or sour foods. When exposed to these substances, a sharp sudden pain shoots deeply into the nerve ending of the affected teeth or tooth. This is an incredibly painful disposition to be in for the affected individual and can be a nightmare. However, there are toothpastes on the market that effectively treat this condition.

Stained Teeth

Everyone wishes to have a picture perfect smile, and as such, often go to drastic measures to achieve their goal of a pearly white smile. The best toothpaste to use in this regard is whitening toothpaste that harnesses the power of diatomaceous whitening agents in an effort to gently lift stains. Teeth whitening kits that contain harmful bleaching agents are not usually good for the teeth as they damage the enamel which is the hard protective outer layer of the tooth.

Fighting Gingivitis

As previously stated, choosing the best toothpaste for you will be determined by your desired results. Anti-bacterial toothpaste is very good for fighting germs and helping to fight against and reverse gum disease such as Gingivitis. If gingivitis is a condition you currently struggle with, using antibacterial toothpaste is a viable option for you.

The Correct Way to Brush Your Teeth

The effectiveness of the toothpaste you use in your dental regime lies not only in the components of the paste or gel itself, but also in using your toothbrush in the right way. Believe it or not, there is a right and a wrong way to brush your teeth. For a thorough clean when brushing, ensure that you go over the sides and front teeth (both outer and underside), the top of the molars and those hard to reach places like the back of the tongue. Regular dentist checkups are also advised.
