3 sexiest smiles of the 2014 AMAs and how to get a smile like theirs

SUMMARY:  Who do you think had the best smile of the 2014 American Music Awards?

Posted: November 24, 2014

It was nothing but red carpet smiles at the American Music Awards 2014 on Nov. 23. From Taylor Swift to Sam Smith, the stars made it out in style, and their pearly whites were looking brighter than ever. A good grin goes hand in hand with celebrity status. Could you imagine a walk down the red carpet with plaque-ridden chompers? Take a peek at the best smiles of the night and some of their secrets on getting such blindingly pearly whites:

Taylor Swift
While kicking off the AMAs act as a mad woman and feeding a boy a poisonous apple on stage, Swift showed off her gleaming smile. Her ruby red lipstick accentuated her sparkling white teeth, too. Good thing the 24-year-old singer didn't chip her tooth like she did at the Pittsburgh show on her 2013 tour. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she explained what happened:

"I try to be really quick with the microphone, so I'm not standing there just waiting to sing with my mic right next to my face, so I really quickly pulled my mic up to sing and basically uppercut punched myself in the tooth. And then part of it fell onto the stage and I was like, 'Oh, I wonder how bad that was. I wonder which tooth that is and I wonder how bad that is,' and I was just trying not to chip another one tonight."

Jennifer Lopez
Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez brought some serious star power to the AMAs, performing with Iggy Azalea in a number called "Booty." Wearing a sparkling red leotard, J. Lo reinforced the notion that a good smile is all part of looking your best. Like Swift, Lopez wore matching red lipstick that boosted the whiteness of her teeth by comparison. A good tip for females: A yellow-toned or bright orange lipstick gives the appearance of yellow-teeth, while berry red lipstick brings out whiteness in a smile.

Harry Styles
English pop singer-songwriter Harry Styles took home three honors, including Artist of the Year with boy band One Direction. The group also won favorite band, duo or group for "Midnight Memories" at the fan-voted show on Sunday night. But unlike many celebrities who get outfitted with a shiny pair of porcelain veneers, Styles keeps it old-school with flashy and real pearly whites. With so many awards, there's clearly a lot to smile about.

The celebrity we missed most: Miley Cyrus
2013 was definitely the year of Miley. But where was she this year? We all remember last year's Video Music Awards when Miley was dancing on stage with Robin Thicke and wagging her white-coated tongue. As the "Wrecking Ball" singer learned the hard way, a tongue can say a lot about one's oral health. When the tongue becomes carpeted in white bacteria, bad breath has likely taken hold. Despite her absence, we'll keep her oral health reminder around for another red carpet award show.

4 ways to get whiter teeth
While many celebrities have impossibly white veneers, there are ways to get an impressive smile without shelling out thousands of dollars. Here's how:

  1. Don't rely only on a dentist: The majority of the work in getting a great smile starts with you. While dental visits are recommended about twice a year, you have to take care of your teeth every day.
  2. Try teeth whitening: Many famous musicians get their teeth whitened in some form or another. Try your own teeth whitening with the easy-to-use, non-irritating TheraBreath whitening products.
  3. Watch out for staining foods: Tea and red wine are some of the key culprits of a nice grin. The ingredients in these products stain dental enamel, discoloring them over time.
  4. Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables: Foods like apples, pears and cucumbers serve as "nature's toothbrush," helping to dislodge food debris stuck in teeth thanks to their crunchiness.
