There are few events where good breath is more important than a first date. Multiple studies have shown that bad breath is the ultimate deal breaker for a potential mate.

Unfortunately, the two most common first dates are at bars and coffee shops; both of which are notoriously unfriendly towards fresh breath. What’s to be done if you want to get a second date?

Why Do Alcohol & Coffee Cause Halitosis?

Alcohol, whether in beer, wine, or cocktails dries your mouth out. This is important because saliva is how the body naturally fights bad breath.

It oxygenates your mouth and kills off excess bad-breath-causing bacteria. Without saliva, your mouth is defenseless against these bacteria and the smelly odors they produce.

If that wasn’t enough to convince you, a healthy amount of saliva is critical for a great kiss, according to Live Science.

Coffee can be even worse for your breath. Caffeine can dry your mouth out just as easily as alcohol can. But on top of that, coffee is high in the sulfur compounds that produce the smell we think of as “bad breath”.

Never fear, though. Here are three steps to preventing bad breath from ruining your first date.

Bonus tip: maybe don't order the pasta puttanesca.

1. Pre-Game with Good Oral Health

The first step is simple — you probably already do it twice a day! Brush, floss, and rinse with a good mouthwash before your date.

Yes, we said floss. A stray piece of spinach can be just as damaging as bad breath.

A word of warning: many popular mouthwashes have a surprisingly high alcohol content. Some of them as high as 29.6%!

By comparison, wine is only 12% alcohol.

Our ADA-approved TheraBreath Fresh Breath Oral Rinse contains no alcohol. It’s also clinically proven to freshen your breath quickly and keep it fresh for up to 24 hours.

If dry mouth is a particular problem for you, you can also try our TheraBreath Dry Mouth Oral Rinse. It’s dentist-formulated with natural salivary enzymes to keep your mouth healthy and moist.

2. Hydrate!

You could, of course, not drink anything. But that’s a bit extreme. Life is too short not to enjoy a great cup of coffee with your crush.

Instead, make sure to have a full glass of water between drinks — whether it’s beer or coffee. This will help fight off the effects of dry mouth as well as keep you from becoming too intoxicated or over-caffeinated.

It can even help reduce the headaches associated with too much alcohol or caffeine consumption. There’s no reason future you should pay for your good time!

3. Gum and Lozenges

If all else fails, you can always excuse yourself to the bathroom and freshen yourself with a lozenge or sugar-free gum.

Our TheraBreath Dry Mouth Lozenges come in two flavors and are perfect if you need to moisturize your mouth near the end of the night.

On the other hand, if all you need is quick breath pick-me-up, you can pop a piece of our Sugar-Free TheraBreath Fresh Breath Chewing Gum. Maybe offer one to your date while you’re at it!

While we can’t promise that you’ll have a great date, follow these steps and we can promise you’ll be confident in your breath.
