As smartphones become ubiquitous, we're privileged to have applications for just about everything, making our day-to-day lives easier to manage. In the case of your teeth, there is a wide array of mobile apps that can help brighten your smile. Whether you need to get in touch with your dentist, ensure that you're brushing your teeth for a full two minutes or just want to learn more about oral health, there's an app for it.

What's more, most of these resources are free or provided at little cost. You can check out the app store on your phone to explore the multitude of oral health applications, but here our five of the coolest ones around to get you started:

1. Brush DJ
This app brings some of your favorite music into the washroom as your brush your teeth. Two minutes of music are randomly selected from a playlist on your smartphone, tablet or other device so that you can easily time how long you're scrubbing away at your chompers. There's a visual display that shows you where to brush as the time goes by, and the app also allows you to set oral health care reminders. Brush DJ will alert you when you need to replace your toothbrush, visit your dentist and daily alarms to brush and floss your teeth, among other things. The Brush DJ website even has a chart so you can see what songs are popular with other app users.

2. MyDentist
Gaining a full understanding of an emergency situation when a patient leaves a voicemail or email message is one of the major challenges facing dentists. Luckily, the MyDentist app uses a combination of texts, pictures and diagrams so that dentists can learn more about possible oral emergencies. According to Medscape, this app can also be used to schedule appointments and refer friend to your dentist.

3. iBracesHelp
Taking care of your teeth when you have braces involves a lot of extra work. However, iBracesHelp is a fantastic app that provides resources about how to clean your teeth when braces are in place and even troubleshooting guides if you experience problems. Even better, this app provides pictures and videos, making it easy to comprehend the given instructions. Furthermore, the iBracesHelp app is complemented by a comprehensive website that includes comfort tips, frequently asked questions, a food center, a list of terminology and a guide to home care. All in all, this app is the perfect resource for anyone wearing braces.

4. Dental Expert
What makes this application great for patients is that provides explanations of dental procedures. For some, going to the dentist can be a nerve-wracking experience. However, if you understand why a hygienist or dentist is performing a certain procedure, it may be easier to deal with. According to 123Dentist, this app also includes tips on how to avoid bad breath, react in a dental emergency and clean children's teeth.

5. Monster Mouth DDS
This app makes learning about different oral hygiene problems fun - plain and simple. In this game, users take on the role of a dentist who cleans the mouths of various monsters. Each creature has a  distinct problem with their teeth, and it's your job to address the issue before the monsters' mouths slam to a close. Monster Mouth DDS is particularly kid-friendly, and includes challenges such as cleaning teeth, X-raying teeth for cracks, pulling out cavities and ensuring the monsters don't have a painful trip to the dentist.
