Unless you've been living under a rock since Sunday, you've seen, heard and analyzed Miley Cyrus' performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. But if you were at that show, you may have been seeking a rock to hide under! The 20-year-old didn't just put on one of the most shocking and provocative shows the award ceremony has ever seen - she also worried several health experts! Apparently Miley's signature face is to stick out her tongue as much as possible, which gave docs plenty of time to collect visual proof that Miley probably had bad breath during her performance.
You probably noticed Miley sticking her tongue out the side of her mouth for the duration of her performance and in photos, but you may have missed the discoloration. One of the easiest ways to diagnose bad breath is by looking at the color of the tongue. Have you ever heard that your tongue should be a pinkish color? Miley's tongue is white in the middle of it, which is a sure fire sign of the overproduction of volatile sulfur compounds. That means she has bad breath!
How to know if you have bad breath
Like Miley, you can stick your tongue out to determine if you have bad breath. Take a look at the coloring. If there is a white coating, your breath may not be super pleasant. If you can't quite tell, you can do the age-old trick of licking the inside of your wrist. Let the saliva dry for a few seconds and then sniff it. However it smells is likely how your breath smells. You may even be able to tell if your breath is a bit smelly by the way your mouth feels. If you notice a metallic taste, that means there is an accumulation of bad breath-causing bacteria. Another way to check your breath is simply to ask a good friend or family member who will be honest without being harsh.
What might cause bad breath
There are a number of reasons why you might have bad breath. From something as simple as eating smelly food to much more complex and serious matters, such as it being a side effect of a larger health issue. Most commonly, bad breath is caused by an uncleanly mouth and a buildup of dental plaque. If you don't brush, floss and rinse twice a day, you don't have to look any further for a cause.
Are you drinking enough water? Dry mouth causes bad breath as well, and simply drinking more water can help. Dry mouth can be caused by a variety of different things, including certain medications, consuming too much alcohol and not having enough fruits and vegetables in your diet. However, this is just scratching the surface of dry mouth causes, and like bad breath, it can be a root cause of something larger.
How to get rid of bad breath
So you've found out you have bad breath? Depending on the root cause, there many ways to get rid of bad breath. If it is something as simple as not maintaining a healthy brushing and flossing routine, you just need to make sure this is a priority. If you have gum disease or tooth decay, you must take care of the issue in order to improve your bad breath. Cutting down on alcohol consumption, reducing intake of unhealthy food and ceasing the use of medications that cause dry mouth can all alleviate your bad breath.
Let's just hope that Miley doesn't have bad breath, because she probably has enough to worry about right now. We guess Billy Ray never gave her the parental advice: Stop making that face, or it will get stuck that way. It seemingly already has.
