With Spring finally upon us, millions of teens and young adults are putting themselves out there and looking for love. Since these folks tend to be pretty aware of what is and isn't attractive, Wakefield Research recently polled them about the effects of halitosis on the dating game, as well as on which cities tend to have residents with fresh breath.

The results were pretty wild, to say the least.

For starters, Los Angeles topped the list of U.S. cities with clean, fresh breath. The City of Angels beat out several other close contenders, including Atlanta (number two), Dallas (number three), and DC and Chicago at fourth and fifth place.

LA's nearby neighbor, San Francisco, fared a lot worse, hitting the bottom of the list at number 10.

Cities weren't the only thing weighed in terms of bad breath. Respondents also told the research firm just how damaging oral odor can be on a date.

For example, around 60 percent of 18- to 30-year-olds said that they'd once lost interest in someone purely because the other person had bad breath. Ouch! Even in a relationship, halitosis was a "no go". 48 percent of women said they'd end an existing relationship if their partner's breath got too funky.

Unfortunately, fashion may be at least partly to blame for all this, since one in four respondents said they'd left their specialty breath freshening gum at home before because their skinny jeans were too tight to accommodate it.

And as for the rest of the blame? Let's just chalk it up to embarrassment. The huge majority of young adults (85 percent) said it's tougher to tell a date they have bad breath than it is to inform them their fly is open. Yeesh.
