Don't let the spring weather cause you nasal congestion
Although much of the country is still experiencing winter-like weather, we're officially in the spring season! You know what that means? Allergies. Coughing, sneezing, sniffling and congestion are how a lot of people welcome - not voluntarily, of course - the warm weather. With these allergies come other issues like post nasal drip, which can be uncomfortable and unflattering. Luckily, there are several ways to combat your allergy-induced post nasal drip.

When allergies hit you, it's hard to tell what it is at first. You may even feel like you're coming down with a cold. Post nasal drip symptoms are similar to those you experience when you've got allergies, and it can actually lead to other illnesses like a sore throat or chronic cough. Post nasal drip is caused by excessive or thick mucus secretions that your body cannot use normally, which is what makes a lot of people feel the need to clear their throat frequently.
How else does post nasal drip affect the body?
Post nasal drip is an upper respiratory illness that can cause bad breath and dry mouth. Post nasal drip dry mouth is fairly common because when your nasal passages are blocked by mucus, it can be difficult to breathe through the mouth normally. When your mouth dries out, it is much more prone to bad breath because the bacteria get trapped in the mouth. A few ways to help
Post nasal drip is the accumulation of mucus in the nose that gets sticky and thick, so one of the most obvious ways to help battle post nasal drip is increasing the amount of water you consume. To help make sure that you're drinking plenty of liquids, always have some on hand. Whether you're sitting on the couch or out at the store, having a water bottle handy is always a good idea. If you've got it with you, there's no excuse for not drinking enough.
Nasal rinses are a great way to clear out your nasal passages to make it easier to breathe! A simple solution of non-iodized salt, filtered water at room temperature and baking soda will do the trick. A solution like this one can be used just like a nasal spray, which is easiest to do while over a sink or tub. You can use this several times a day, as well.
Putting some heat on your nasal passages can help them clear up. A lot of post nasal drip sufferers find that symptoms tend to get worse during the night, especially when it comes to breathing. You can purchase a nasal sleeping mask that you heat up in the microwave, or you can even make one at home. Not too crafty? If you soak a hand towel in hot water and put it on your face, it will feel just as good, although it won't stay hot for as long.
Lastly, you may want to cut out any food or drink items that dry out your system. We know, cutting out that morning coffee comes with some side effects, but if you can go from three cups to just one, you may notice a huge difference. If you're a caffeine lover, try to switch to tea as much as possible. Other habits that may be drying you out include smoking, drinking alcohol and an unhealthy diet.
