Flossing is an important component to an oral hygiene regimen. Not only does the act of flossing protect long-term gum health, but it also helps eradicate the between-teeth bacteria that can cause bad breath. In spite of these benefits, a joint survey between the American Dental Association and Crest/Oral-B revealed that as much as half of the American population does not incorporate flossing into their daily routine. But why would anyone want to drop a habit that reduces risk of halitosis and gum disease?
Speedy flossing eases routines
Lack of time might be one excuse, but New Jersey dentist Dr. Carlos Meulene doesn't want a tight schedule to inhibit good flossing habits, reported Lifehacker. Meulener has recently taken to YouTube to post a video demonstrating the proper - and quick - way to floss. It's the method professionals use, and it should take no longer than a single minute.
Technique and proper control are more important to the act of the flossing than one might think. The first rule in Dr. Meulener's tutorial is to hold floss the correct way. Holding the floss with middle fingers will afford the most agility while tending to the bottom row of teeth. For the chompers up top, it's best to use thumbs as a guide. One thumb or finger can remain stationary as the other digit uses it as a pivot point - this is the part that allows for quick tooth care without cutting corners on thoroughness. Once someone gets the hang of proper hold, the next step is to ensure cleaning of both walls of the teeth that share a space.
Dr. Meulener's technique counters the claim that flossing takes too much time. For those who have difficulty remembering to floss, perhaps this gentle reminder will stick.
