Water is not only an essential substance for maintaining proper mental and physical balance, it also is important for avoiding bad breath. Many experts say that drinking more water may be a simple way to ward off halitosis.
Anita White Barbero, a Connecticut-based health consultant and lecturer, told Foothills Media that dehydration caused by a failure to drink enough water can lead to bad breath primarily because the mouth becomes dried out.
Food particles are less likely to be washed into the stomach for digestion in a mouth that is dry. As these food buildups begin to break down in the mouth, an unpleasant aroma is often produced. However, drinking water washes these buildups out of the mouth.
A hydrated body is also more capable of producing saliva, which has a similar effect. Saliva can keep bacteria in check, which is another primary cause of bad breath. Individuals who primarily drink soda and other caffeinated beverages may benefit from looking into specialty breath freshening products. Short of having a properly hydrated body, these mouthwashes and toothpastes may be one of the best ways to treat bad breath.
